Autumn tour blog by Louisa Hassell - Part 1: Sadler's Wells

Scottish Ballet dancer Louisa Hassell gives us a behind the scenes peek on the Autumn tour.

6th October 2009

The run up to this autumn season was pretty challenging. The Company had just finished rehearsing for and then performing at the Edinburgh International Festival, the final show was on the Saturday night then it was straight back in the studio the following Monday morning with the start of Balanchine’s Rubies. Teaching us was Patricia Neary, who worked with Balanchine himself and understands the tough demands of the choreography. There was only one week for Pat to teach and rehearse everyone to the high standards needed, which resulted in a full on week. She is a demanding lady!

Also being rehearsed was Forsythe's Workwithinwork, which we performed at the festival and Pastor's In Light and Shadow, both also very demanding pieces. I think everyone was excited to perform this season; the repertoire is fantastic with some amazing music, and as well as the usual Scottish venues, the cCmpany was also going to be performing in London at Sadler's Wells. It’s been a few years since we last performed there and it’s a special venue.

The week of Sadler's Wells was very tiring but well worth it. The day before was quite stressful due to illnesses and injuries meaning that for the dress rehearsal some of the boys were doubling up on parts just so the show could go on. But for the opening night, everyone was ok and able to perform. Everyone was nervous but very excited. As many of us trained in London, lots of friends came to support us in the audience as well as many of the dancers' families, including some from abroad. It’s always extra special when there is someone in the audience that you know.

The performance went extremely well and the audience was fantastic and seemed to really enjoy all three pieces. Afterward, there was a post -how party front of house where everyone enjoyed dinner and a well-deserved drink! The rest of the week was also a success with two more great shows. Scotland next!
